Reagan's Vision?

In 1983 , the Cold Warrior Ronald Reagan proposed an "anti-missile system" effectively placing a shield around the United States to protect it from incoming ballistic missiles. Although never deployed, the concert of the Strategic Defense Initiative has lived on ever since.

U.S. Navy Successfully Tests Sea-Based Missile Defense System

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The U.S. Navy and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) have successfully stopped a ballistic missile, shooting it down with an interceptor missile launched at sea.

Using the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), which was developed by Boeing and Raytheon, and the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Weapon System, the guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie shot down an incoming missile launched from the Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii. The kill was the eighth successful test of the Navy's short- to intermediate-range ballistic missile defense.

Debra Rub-Zenko, vice president of Boeing Integrated Missile Defense explains, "This test successfully demonstrated the modified SM-3 Kinetic Warhead's performance for the first time in an exo-atmospheric intercept. The test showed that modifications made over the last two years have been effective and the SM-3 and its Kinetic Warhead provide the system performance needed by the warfighter to defeat ballistic missile attacks."

"Boeing is proud to be a member of the industry team committed to providing this extraordinarily effective operational capability to MDA and the Navy."

According to Boeing, "once the Aegis BMD system guided the SM-3 to the right point in space, the SM-3 kinetic warhead successfully acquired the target and computed an accurate guidance and control intercept trajectory for the hit-to-kill intercept."

placing a shield around the United States to protect it from incoming ballistic missiles....now if we could only find a shield for nukes and WMD's eh!
Have a super weekend my friend! :)

Thanks Angel. I think the real problem will be from a nuclear device that is set off inside the US. Border security, an issued totally foreign to the Bush administration, is the only way to prevent such an event.
Any country that launched a ballistic missile attack on the US would be completely removed from the planet.

Reagan left office nearly 20 years ago. And he's still protecting us!

Of course, we may well get attacked from within. **sigh**

You're right, AC. I'm more concerned about an attack within our borders than from anywhere else. That's why our borders being so open is such a concern and I truly don't understand it!

OH for another Reagan!
AC, i thought of you today as I passed yet another, "Yankee go home" grafiti on my wall.

we had two go off in the summer of 2001 in arkansas right over our campsite - we were helping a friend build a log cabin that summer - it was about one or two o'clock in the morning and they were aimed for the pacific ocean - IT WAS POWERFUL AWESOME! there are several "eros" bases here, although i'm not sure we're supposed to know that...as brooke would say, "i'm just sayin'..."

nancpop swears most of the cattle here are decoys as that's usually where the sdi bases are.

AC is right... How hard would it be, especially now with the upcoming superhighway, for a terrorist to simply stroll across our borders with a WMD?

Not very hard at all, I think...

I agree with AC, although I think it'll be of the "dirty bomb" variety.
It's cheaper, easier and can be taken over the border in several parts and rejoined later.

The SM-3 system is great if you're near a coastline or deep river. Course Reagan's 600 ship Navy has taken quite a hit...

You should talk to your new Senator about that, Always. That was supposed to be his job...

Definitely have to keep an eye on our unguarded borders with a growing Islamic presence in South America.

We know what the far left is about.
This is an entirely defensive weapons system. However China now has the ability to knock out satelites.

Dar al-Harb, New York. Too funny.

"During World War II, he said, we could be in this place and there would be a guy sitting at that table who was in the war, or the bartender had been in the war. Everybody you saw would have had a stake in the war. But right now you could walk around New York for blocks and not find anybody who has been in Iraq.
The president can say we're a country at war all he wants. We're not. The military is at war. And the military families are at war. Everybody else is shopping."
