Ahmadinejad Back to Old Tricks
As if dealing with one loony dictator wasn't enough, Iran's president has once again questioned Israel's right to exist.
TEHRAN, Oct 19, 2006 (AFP) - A defiant President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted Thursday that Iran will not back down "an inch" over its nuclear programme despite the growing threat of sanctions, and fired off another verbal attack on Israel, calling it a fraudulent regime that cannot survive.
"The world must know that the Iranian people will not back down even an inch on its rights to peaceful nuclear energy," Ahmadinejad said in a speech in Islamshahr, southwest of the capital.
"The enrichment of uranium and having nuclear fuel are among the main demands of Iranian nation," he added in the address broadcast live on state television.
Iran has vehemently rejected warnings by the West to halt its sensitive nuclear activities, particularly the enrichment of uranium, a process which makes fuel for nuclear power stations but can be extended to form the core of an atomic bomb.
The West sees Iran's nuclear programme as a cover for weapons development, but Tehran insists it is for peaceful energy purposes only, and says it has every right to enrich uranium under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Ahmadinejad also took another verbal swipe at its arch-enemy Israel, saying "the Zionist regime is fraudulent and illegitimate and cannot survive".
"The big powers have created this fraud regime and allowed it to commit all kind of crimes to guarantee their interests," he told the crowd.
Ahmadinejad has in the past called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" or even relocated as far away as Alaska, and has also questioned the Holocaust.
His comments came on the eve of the Islamic republic's "Qods (Jerusalem) Day" in support of the Palestinians and to condemn Israel.
Israel has repeatedly said Iran is now its greatest threat, following the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq in 2003.
The Jewish state is however widely considered the Middle East's sole, if undeclared nuclear weapons power with an estimated arsenal of 200 warheads. Complete story here.

The article also says: "Moscow also supplies the Islamic republic with sophisticated conventional weapons and has multi-billion economic ties with Iran." That's what I don't get. I'm sure they are still ticked off that we won the cold war, but for heavens sake, why they don't understand that if they, along with the help of Iran, were to take out the entire Western world, which is their private wet dream, that Ahmadinejad and all the rest of the Islamofascists will turn on them next. Can they be that brain dead?
Russia has been moving further away from democracy for quite some time now.
Many NGOs have been shut down and forced to leave.
For the past several years, the Russian state under Vladimir Putin has been steadily working to bring the media to heel.
Just last week there was the assassination in Moscow of the well-known human rights journalist Anna Politkovskaya who was a strong critic of Putin.
Putin blames killers out to "stain" his government. Not likely.
In his last election, Putin had done everything possible to guarantee that no one could challenge his authority. The government had taken over national television, emasculated the power of the country's governors, converted parliament into a rubber stamp, jailed the main financier of the political opposition and intimidated the most potent would-be challengers from entering the race.
We're gearing up for another all-out World War, no doubt about it... Between the Arabs, Norks, Russians and the Chicoms; it's coming.
Russia is a mess, but the Russian do not know the difference, between the Commies and the Czars, they as dysfunctional as you can get. And after the Cossack enforced pograms of the past, they care little for the Jewish population. So they will not directly ally themselves with Iran, they won't stop selling them weapons until the last possible second.
The West sees Iran's nuclear programme as a cover for weapons development...
Isn't that the same old, same old? We've been here before.
Putin is all about the power.
One thing I give the Israelis is their chutzpah! We have them to thank for bombing Saddams Nuclear facility back in the 80's. And I tell ya they will not tolerate Iran having a Nuke.
FTGF!
i thought i made a comment here awhile back...did i get deleted?
Probably, nanc. That'll teach you for staring at AC's... meow.
nanc...I would never delete one of your comments.
AOW..you're right about this being the same old rerun Iranian trash. I hated posting it but decided that we can't forget for one minute what this man is about.
FTGF...I agree about Israel. There aren't many countries that would want to see Israeli troops and military power being brought against them.
farmer john...lol. Glad to see you.
obob...the only good thing about Russia is that its economy has expanded by 7% the last year and seems to be doing at least as well this year. Hopefully a strong economy can install capitalistic ideals that Putin won't try to curb.
Bang on FTGF and AC. I stand by Israel...a little democratic sliver of land just ten miles wide (at one point) with 6 million Jews surrounded by, what, 150-200 million Arabs dreaming of it's demise. Most of those Arabs know better than to mess with Israel!
Crusader it was good of you to remind us that this nutjob still poses a threat (although the nutjob himself does a good job of reminding us every few days...) You know, insane dictators say crazy things all the time...
"I don't see much future for the Americans..."

The tribute to the US Coast Gaurd on Daniel/FTGF's site is fantastic and learning about Crusader's ship's history (The Courageous) was a blast. AC you served your country honourably. Everyone should be proud of you and all the brave men and women who serve in maritime law enforcement, mariner assistance, search and rescue, and national defense.
Semper Paratus!
AC,
No surprise here.He thumbs his nose at the world, and gets a pat on the back from Solana. The non stop appeasement only strengthens this madman in the eyes of the fanatic. He won't stop until he is pushing up palm trees.
