Patrick Kennedy addicted to OxyContin

Remember when Rush Limbaugh admitted his addiction to painkillers in October 2003? The liberals had a field day calling Limbaugh a hypocrite and the Jay Leno's of the world had a great time at his expense. But now it's Patrick Kennedy who has admitted his addiction to painkillers...the very same ones that Rush Limbaugh was addicted to... OxyContin.

Representative Patrick Kennedy Says He Sought Help for Addiction Before Crash

NEW YORK — Rep. Patrick Kennedy said Friday he sought treatment for an addiction to the painkiller OxyContin months before wrecking his car outside the U.S. Capitol last year.

The Rhode Island Democrat told NBC-TV's "Today" show that he felt great in his recovery from substance abuse and was determined not to let the disease "take its toll on me ever again."

Kennedy checked into the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota last May after the car crash, saying at the time that he had also been at the clinic the previous Christmas. He said only that he was addicted to "pain medication" and did not name OxyContin.

Kennedy has been open about his struggles with mental illness, including bipolar disorder and addictions to alcohol and other substances. He said it didn't matter what substance he was addicted to.

Well...he is a Democrat so mental illness and drug addictions shouldn't hinder his reelection campaign.

"Even though I had detoxified from pain medication, one thing you learn as an addict is you can substitute anything for your main addiction," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said Friday that his public profile helped him after he checked into rehab because it has prompted other recovering alcoholics and addicts to approach him. Still, he acknowledged being hesitant to admit his addictions publicly because he said he felt ashamed.

So here we have it. Patrick Kennedy asked for help but apparently none was available, at least that's what he would have us believe. I can't help but wonder if the media will cover Patrick Kennedy's addiction in the same way as they cover Rush Limbaugh's? Your thoughts?

I don't think Democrats were concerned with the drug Rush used, it was his house keepers story that brought the attention to the public, and his doctor shopping.

David..I wonder if Kennedy was also guilty of doctor shopping? But let's be honest..Rush Limbaugh was too much of a target to let pass. Even I have a hard time listening to his rabid shows.

AC

The Kennedy's get elected in spite of manslaughter. The Rush bit was a huge joke including his firing at ESPN.

The prosecution for doctor shopping
was politcally motivated. This is a crime that almost never end up with criminal charges

No they won't, but glad you aare.

"Kennedy has been open about his struggles with mental illness, including bipolar disorder and addictions to alcohol and other substances."

I never know if politicians are being "open" because they want to seriously defeat their problems or because someone threatened to go public with the information or because it makes them "look" honest. I don't want to sound jaded so I'll give Kennedy the benefit of the doubt...

i cannot even laugh at anything having to do with oxycontin or people who use it as a crutch - my sister died four years ago this april 5 from a deadly drug (pharmaceutical) combination including oxycontin. it is highly addictive from the moment a person begins taking it.

drugs - legal or otherwise are an extreme hazard. our nation's drug companies spend in excess of NINETY BILLION DOLLARS per year in advertising campaigns; we are the MOST drug addicted society in the world. what we spend on pharms would feed EVERY SINGLE STARVING person on the planet for at LEAST three solid years!

GET OFF DRUGS - if you think you are better than the common street addict because YOURS IS PRESCRIPTION - THINK AGAIN! doctors WANT you addicted.

i'll be okay now...

So when do the criminal investigations of Kennedy begin?

Oh yeah, never, he's a Democrat. We only prosecute people who actually had a conscience to begin with.

I am still in shock there could be a scandal in the Kennedy clan. They are the most beloved and honest family in America. How could there be any implication criminal or acts of adultry? Shocked I say! Shocked!

Things like this happen to families every day everywhere. I don't place any stigma on Kennedy, he has a problem, he admitted it and is seeking help. My problem is only with the uneven coverage.
I don't even think it's a big deal but Limbaugh was made a national joke but most conservatives find making fun of someone's addiction is not a laughing matter.

Where Rush was reviled and spat upon by the left, PK will be welcomed with open arms and coddled as a "victim."

What a bunch of blatant hypocrisy!

At least in a football game both teams are playing on an even field. Today's liberal media does all it can to mislead the truth.

Good one, Crusader!

Now, addiction to Oxycontin is a real monkey on the back. But the addiction can be beaten.

Patrick Kennedy is using addiction as an excuse for bad behavior. He's not "working the program."
